Dan Martinez International Faculty Exchange Presentation
Dan Martinez made a presentation on the Mexican Culture for International Education Week. The presentation has pictures about almost all the historical places in Mexico. He gave explanations on different things. He also showed some pictures of pyramids and beautiful cascades in Mexico. The two cities that he mostly showed were Veracruz and Oaxaca, Mexico. He also showed some businesses and the University of Veracruz Mexico. We also saw some pictures on the Mexican dances and the Mexican food. The presentation was pretty interesting. I learned a lot from it even though I’m from Mexico.
On November 17, 2005, Dan Martinez gave his Reading 081 class a presentation of his experience on his International Faculty Exchange. He and other members of the faculty went to Jalapa, Mexico. According to Dan the location in Jalapa where they had to stay was very tropical. They also went to the University Library and Computer Center, a three stories high building. In the surroundings of this building you would see trees, a lake, a fountain, and flowers. In Mexico soccer is the main sport that most people like to play. And according to Dan while he was in Jalapa, he would see kids, teenagers, and adults playing soccer everywhere. Dan and the others didn’t just stayed in Jalapa; they also went to visit other cities that were near their location. They also visited Tule, Mexico where they saw the oldest and thickest tree; the tree is 2000 years old. Another interesting thing that he said was that they visited one of the 165 churches that are served by four priests in a city of 200,000 people. All these churches are located at Cholula, Mexico, and he also said that the church that they visited had been destroy many times by earthquakes, and it had been rebuilt over and over.
The last week was very interesting because a lot of students participated in the International Education Week events the last week. I went to the presentation about Mexico (Mexican culture) by Dan Martinez on Monday. It showed the Mayan culture, which was one of the largest tribes in the Americas; they had knowledge of mathematics, art and created the Mayan calendar. They also built large cities, such as Tulum. Mexico is a country full of traditions, different customs and several dialects which are preserved to this day. This is very good for students, faculty and staff because they can participate in the community with appreciation for the many cultural influences that affect our lives.
